Evaluation of Services:

The goal of Family Trauma Service’s outcome measures is to track the progress of our clients in a way that informs treatment decisions.  The Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) is utilized to assess the degree of impairment in children and adolescents ages 7 through 17.  The CAFAS represents the child’s problems in a way which makes sense to family members, teachers, and other professionals.  The CAFAS is rated by a Family Trauma Service’s Counselor and is used to record the extent to which a youth’s mental health and/or substance abuse problems are disruptive of functioning in five psychosocial areas, namely role performance, behavior toward others, moods/self-harm, substance use, and thinking.  The CAFAS also includes scales to assess the extent to which the youth’s care giver(s)  are able to provide for the needs of the youth.  The CAFAS provides a “snapshot” of the youth’s functioning at present and is administered every three months to assess functioning.

Family Trauma Service also utilizes the North Carolina Family Assessment Scale (NCFAS) as a practice-based, family assessment tool designed to measure aspects of family functioning.  The NCFAS assesses functioning in five domains, namely, environment, parental capabilities, family interactions, family safety, and child well-being.  The NCFAS is designed to capture the ecological nature of family functioning and allows for the assessment of strengths as well as deficits.  The NCFAS is capable of detecting small changes in family functioning during brief interventions which make it appealing for FTS’s brief interventions.

To assess client satisfaction, Family Trauma Service administers either the Vanderbilt Parent Satisfaction Scale or Clifford Attkisson’s Client Satisfaction Scale depending upon the intensity of service provided.  The Vanderbilt Satisfaction Scale asks 45 questions pertaining to client satisfaction with clinical services, including convenience and accessibility, satisfaction with treatment services, satisfaction with relationship with clinical staff, transition services, and overall satisfaction.  The Client Satisfaction Scale is an eight item instrument designed to elicit clients’ perceptions of the value of the services received.  Client satisfaction information is utilized to modify existing treatment services if necessary as well as to inform future program and treatment development.
