FTS Granted Authority to Direct Bill DMAS for Intensive In-Home Services

Starting October 1st, Family Trauma Services (FTS) will provide Medicaid Intensive In-Home Services throughout the northern Virginia region. As many of you know, for over 7 years FTS has been providing quality home-based services for at-risk youth and their families, including those under Medicare and Medicaid. With this new program, FTS can offer these services directly to client families, referring caseworkers, school staff, and private and public residential programs and hospitals. This easy referral process means Medicaid certified youth are able to receive services quickly, and referring workers can immediately ensure that their clients are receiving coordinated, multi-therapeutic mental health treatment with 24-hour coverage.

The new Intensive In-Home Services process is much less time consuming for referring workers, with less administrative protocols and paperwork. CSB or FAPT authorization and their related review processes will not be required. Family Trauma Services is responsible for all documentation, direct billing, and compliance with state regulations and licensing standards. All that is required is an intake phone call for client assessment and treatment to begin.

Who is Eligible?

According to the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services, Intensive In-home Services are for children and adolescents with a diagnosable DSM IV disorder. Time-limited interventions are typically provided in the home of a child or adolescent who is at risk of being moved to an out of home placement or services can be provided to a child or adolescent who is being transitioned home from an out-of-home placement .

FTS clinical staff will assess the client, determining if they meet the following criteria: have a diagnosable disorder under the DSM IV; meet the criteria for SED or are at-risk for SED; are more likely to benefit from services provided in their home rather than an office; are ages 2 to 18; will not be in additional services, other than Day Treatment and medication management; and have at least one parent who is willing and able to participate in services with the youth.

What Services are Provided?

In-Home Intensive Services are provided to youth and their families for at least 5 hours per week, up to 26 weeks. The “wrap around” interventions include: individual and family counseling, crisis intervention, life, parenting, and communication skills, psychoeducational opportunities, case management and collaboration with other service providers, and 24 hour emergency response. These home-based services are provided by masters- and bachelors-level staff with specialized training and experience in In-Home services to youth and families. As always, FTS staff are fully qualified and are dedicated to supporting at-risk youth and families in our community.
